Vivian Salamatu's story is a testament to her strength in the face of unimaginable difficulties. She's one of around 200 women who have shared a similar, difficult experience – being accused of witchcraft. Accusations that often lead to violence, being kicked out of their homes, and finding a strange kind of shelter in places they called 'witches camps.'
In a story documented by The global sisters, it was reported thus:
Salamatu's journey into this tough situation started when her nephew passed away after a short illness. Instead of receiving support, her own relatives accused her of being a witch and blamed her for her nephew’s death.
To decide whether she was guilty or not, the village elders and people there came up with a strange and harsh test. They took a chicken, cut its throat, and threw it into the air. The test was simple: if the chicken fell headfirst, it meant she was a witch.
Unfortunately, the chicken's fell head first and confirmed that she’s a witch.
That night, a group of people, including her own family, attacked her and set her house on fire. They even wanted to harm her children.
Salamatu was tied up with a rope but thankfully and luckily for her, she was saved by a group of nuns and local authorities who brought her and her children to a place called the Gushegu 'witch camp' in the northern part of the country.
Salamatu survived, despite losing her husband in a road accident just a year before. She's thankful to God and the nuns who rescued her. She sees it as nothing short of a miracle and a second chance at life."
Vivian Salamatu's tough journey shows us how superstitious beliefs still affect many people. These beliefs put innocent lives in danger and push them into places where they're treated badly, taking away their happiness and replacing them with eternal sorrow.
After hearing Salamatu's story, let's all do our part to stop these harmful acts.
It's time to say no to superstitious beliefs and work towards a society where we respect our elders and treat everyone with dignity.
Special thanks to “The Global Sisters” for providing the story in this video.
