For far too long, Ghana has been marred by the brutal treatment of elderly women accused of witchcraft.
Join us as we delve into the heart-wrenching stories of these victims.
1.On September 29, 2023, tragedy struck in Janga, a small town in the West Mampruri Municipality of the North-East Region when a 60-year-old woman named Musah Azaratu Poana lost her life to a horrific witchcraft accusation.
According to a report by Modern Ghana, Azaratu was allegedly killed by two brothers who stormed her house, accusing her of bewitching their father. They claimed she was responsible for their father's illness and heartlessly shot her multiple times, ensuring Azaratu was killed in the process.
2. In Zakpasi, a farming community in the Mion District of the Northern Region, a shocking incident unfolded on May 7, 2023. Pulse.com.gh reported that two residents, with the names Imoro Safura (aged 40) and Cherefo Mba, were brutally beaten to death by enraged fellow community members after a soothsayer accused them of witchcraft. It was revealed that a soothsayer was consulted over the illness of a woman in the zakpasi community, who then accused a particular Imoro Safura and Cherefo of being behind the ill woman’s predicament. This accusation was to prompt some angry community youth to storm safura’s house in order to attack her. Safura was said to have ran to seek refuge at the chief’s palace but unfortunately was overpowered and lynched in the process. As if that was not enough, these law in-abiding youths again pursued Cherefo and reportedly killed him at his residence.
3. About 23 years ago, a gruesome incident occurred in Tema, near Accra, as reported by BBC news, A 72-year-old woman named Ama Hemmah was set on fire by a group of five adults, including one who claimed to be a pastor. They subjected Ama to brutal torture until she confessed to being a witch. Following her confession, they doused her in kerosene and set her ablaze. Ama was reported to have died from her injuries the following day.
4. Abubakari Ayishatu narrowly escaped a similar fate in her community. As reported by Modern Ghana, the elderly woman in her sixties was severely beaten by an angry mob in Tataligu, Karaga District, Northern Region. The violence erupted after an oracle declared Ayishatu responsible for a recent death of a young man in her community. Her son, Abubakr Abdallah, was said to be on the farm when he received a frantic call claiming his mother is on the verge of dying from the brutal hand of the community mob. Abdullah claimed to have hastily ran home to save his mom but was also nearly attacked by the enraged mob. He managed to escape from the scene and then called friends from walewale who rescued Ayishatu and rushed her to Walewale Government Hospital for medical treatment.
5. Several years ago, in East Gonja, a northern region of Ghana, a 90-year-old woman named Akua Dentah fell victim to a brutal murder after being accused of witchcraft.
